Fine or Thick Hair? How to Tell

Fine strands looking for weightless bounce? Let’s start with a quick test, then what fine hair loves.

Fine or thick? Take one hair off your brush and roll it between your fingers. Barely feel it? It’s fine. Feel it clearly, and it’s smooth? It’s thick hair. Stiff or rough instead? That’s wiry, and the quiz has its own answer for it. Try two or three from different spots and go with what most of them feel like.

Fine is the width of each strand. You can have lots of it. It just takes less to weigh it down.

First, a Few Tips

  1. Conditioner from the ears down, and less than you think. With fine hair, a little goes a long way.
  2. Start with the smallest amount of anything. You can always add a little more.

Your Routine, Step by Step

  • Wash: lightweight, at the scalp.
  • Condition: light, from the ears down.
  • Leave in: a light spray from the ears down, never a heavy cream.
  • Dry: roots first, against the way they fall. Lower heat.

Fine hair is easy to weigh down. Let’s find a routine that keeps it light.
