How to Air Dry Without Frizz

Squeeze, don’t rub.

Squeeze the water out, put your leave-in on while it’s wet, then hands off until it’s dry.

What to Do

  1. Detangle gently. Straight hair: before you wet it, ends first. Waves or curls: only with conditioner in, fingers first. More in which brush to use.
  2. Squeeze with an old cotton t-shirt. Don’t rub.
  3. Leave-in on wet hair, from the ears down. Then your styler.
  4. Hands off until it’s completely dry.

Why the Squeeze Matters

Wet hair is at its most fragile, so the hours it stays wet add up. In one lab study on hair samples washed and dried 30 times, letting hair dry on its own did more damage than a dryer held about six inches (15 cm) away and kept moving. Squeezing out the water and keeping your hands off shortens those hours.
